In 1975, DePaul debuted this little devil as its official athletics mascot, giving a nod to the school’s reputation for basketball in particular; however, the school’s Catholic roots make its choice of mascot curious at best. The nickname isn’t necessarily related to the Devil himself, but actually its namesake, St. Vincent DePaul. When the school changed its name from St. Vincent’s College to DePaul University, its athletic teams wore a large “D” on their uniforms. A game announcer called them the “D-men,” and the “Demons” nickname was born.
